The Monsoon Threat: 90% Humidity in Indian Closets
From July through September, the Indian monsoon brings relief from scorching heat, but creates severe hazards for textile preservation. Closet humidity frequently crosses 85% to 90%. Natural plant and animal fibers—such as combed cotton, wool, silk blends, and deep-pile velvets—naturally absorb ambient water vapor.
Trapped inside dark wooden almirahs or under-bed storage boxes, this trapped dampness triggers Aspergillus mildew, musty odors, and silverfish infestations that can permanently ruin heirloom bedcovers.
5 Golden Rules for Storing Bedding During Rains
- Sun-Bake Before Sealing: Never pack away bedcovers or dohars directly after laundry unless they have been baked in strong dry sunlight for at least 4 hours. Even 2% residual dampness in the inner batting will germinate mold within 72 hours of storage.
- Avoid Airtight Plastic Bags for Natural Fibers: Sealing pure cotton or silk in airtight non-breathable polythene bags traps humidity inside. Use breathable cotton canvas zip bags that allow air molecules to migrate while keeping dust and insects out.
- Deploy Silica Gel Canisters: Place 50g rechargeable silica gel desiccant canisters in each wardrobe compartment. They actively absorb moisture from the air, maintaining safe internal relative humidity below 50%.
- Natural Insect Repellents (Skip Chemical Naphthalene): Chemical mothballs (naphthalene) leave an acrid chemical smell that binds to fabrics for months. Instead, use dried neem leaves, cedarwood balls, and cloves wrapped in porous muslin pouches.
- Wardrobe Airing Sessions: On bright, sunny monsoon afternoons, open your wardrobe doors for 30 minutes with the room ceiling fan at maximum speed to flush out stagnant humid air pockets.
What to Do If Mildew Spots Appear
If you discover small black or white fungal speckles on a cotton bedcover, do not wet it immediately. Take it outside into direct sunlight and brush the dry spores off with a soft bristles brush. Then sponge the area with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water before a thorough hot wash.
