What Exactly is a Traditional Indian Dohar?
A true Indian dohar is an exquisite feat of textile temperature management developed in the arid royal courts of Rajasthan. Unlike modern synthetic comforters filled with polyester fiberfill, a traditional dohar contains zero synthetic batting.
Instead, it is constructed by sandwiching a soft middle layer of brushed cotton or soft flannel (traditionally called falalen) between two outer sheets of gossamer-fine, semi-translucent combed cotton mulmul (muslin). The three layers are locked together around the perimeter with an ornamental hand-stitched piping (magzi).
Why Dohars Are the Gold Standard for AC Sleep
In modern Indian urban bedrooms, air conditioning is typically set between 24°C and 26°C. At this temperature:
- A standard cotton bedsheet is too thin, leaving shoulders cold after 3:00 AM.
- A polyester micro-duvet is too hot, causing you to wake up sweating at 4:30 AM.
- A 3-layer cotton mulmul dohar creates a microclimate of exactly 28°C to 30°C against the skin, breathing continuously through open-pore muslin threads.
Single vs. Double Dohar Sizing Guide
| Dohar Size | Inches Dimension | Centimeters | Ideal Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Bed Dohar | 60″ x 90″ | 150 x 228 cm | Kids room, single twin bed, travel wrap |
| Double / Queen Dohar | 90″ x 100″ | 228 x 254 cm | Standard Queen mattresses, guest bedrooms |
| Super King Dohar | 108″ x 108″ | 274 x 274 cm | Generous 78x72 inch master mattresses (no tug-of-war) |
Washing and Caring for Delicate Mulmul Dohars
Because mulmul cotton uses fine 60s or 80s yarn, machine wash your dohars on a gentle or delicate cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Never use harsh bleaching agents. Air dry in the shade; the ultra-fine cotton will dry in less than 90 minutes on a breezy balcony.
